The Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau (“Bureau”) released a Public Notice that it is seeking comment on the implementation of Signaling System 7 (“SS7”) security best practices. In March 2017, the Communications Security, Reliability, and Interoperability Council (“CSRIC”) recommended that communications service providers implement certain security measures to help prevent exploitation of carrier SS7 network infrastructure. The recommendations were designed to increase risk awareness, identify measures to promote network security, and recommend next generation protocols for SS7 and related infrastructures. The Bureau now seeks public comment on its August 2017 recommendations for best practices and any alternative recommendations, including any progress, barriers, and lessons learned.
