On Wednesday, February 13, 2019, the Commission issued a news release reiterating Chairman Pai’s call for the implementation of a robust caller ID authentication system to combat spoofed Robocalls. As you may recall, on November 5, 2018, the Chairman asked the nation’s largest carriers to provide information about their authentication plans and urged for implementation of the SHAKEN/STIR framework in 2019. Through the SHAKEN/STIR framework, calls will be digitally validated by the carriers before reaching the consumer.
Several phone companies outlined their plans in their response letters to Chairman Pai’s previous call for implementation, which can be found here. Some carriers stated that they would implement a caller ID authentication system in the coming months, while others voiced their concerns with implementing the system.
