FCC Releases Public Notice Approving SASs for Initial Deployment

On September 16, 2019, the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and Office of Engineering and Technology (collectively, “WTB/OET”) released a Public Notice approving the following five Spectrum Access System Administrators (“SAS”) to begin initial commercial deployments (“ICD”) in the 3.5 GHz Band:

Amdocs, CommScope, Federated Wireless, Inc., Google and Sony. The ICD stage is intended to satisfy the real-world element of the testing process and demonstrate whether each SAS can operate under actual deployment conditions.

This approval is subject to several ongoing compliance obligations, which are outlined in the Public Notice. An SAS Administrator will not receive final certification unless the listed conditions are met, and such certification can be revoked at any time if the SAS Administrator fails to comply with the FCC’s rules and guidance on an ongoing basis. SAS Administrators that receive final certifications will be allowed to make their SASs available for commercial use for the permitted five-year term, which will commence upon future announcements of such SAS certification and availability.
