On September 3, 2020, the FCC announced the close of the first Rural Tribal Priority Window for spectrum in the 2.5 GHz Band. The window opened on February 3, 2020 and closed on September 2, 2020 at 6:00 PM, after a 30 day extension due to the current pandemic. The Rural Tribal Priority Window offered Tribal entities to obtain overlay licenses for prime mid-band spectrum to help address connectivity needs on Tribal Lands.
The FCC received more than 400 applications from Tribal entities throughout the country. FCC staff will begin reviewing the applications immediately and requesting additional information or comments where necessary to process the applications. Licenses issued through this window will provide Tribal entities with access to spectrum that will allow them to connect consumers living on rural Tribal Lands. Any remaining unassigned spectrum will be made available by auction, anticipated to begin in the first half of 2021.
