FCC Reminds Providers of Upcoming WEA Test

On August 5, 2021, the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau released a Public Notice reminding participants of the upcoming August 11, 2021 test of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (“WEA”).  As a reminder, the FCC in coordination with FEMA will conduct the test on August 11, 2021 (next Wednesday) at 2:20 PM EDT, with a backup date of August 25, 2021.

FEMA will originate the nationwide WEA test using the State/Local WEA Test category.  CMS Providers who have volunteered to participate are required to transmit the State/Local Test message and enable subscribers to opt in to receive it.  The WEA message should be accompanied by a unique audio and vibration attention signal to ensure accessibility, and must be preserved in a consumer-accessible format and location for at least 24 hours or until deleted by the subscriber.
