January 5, 2023 Weekly Wireless Wrap-Up

Happy New Year from Washington, DC!  Below you will find this week’s Wireless Wrap-Up, your update on the wireless telecommunications regulatory landscape, important wireless decisions, and more!  Here is your wrap-up:

  • 911 LOCATION-BASED ROUTING
    • On 12/22, the FCC released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (“NPRM”) seeking comment on a proposal that would require wireless carries and covered text providers to implement location-based routing for 911 calls and texts nationwide.   • DIGITAL DISCRIMINATION
    • On 12/22, the FCC released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (“NPRM”) seeking comment on proposals to address digital discrimination to broadband internet access service.   • SATELLITE APPLICATIONS
    • On 12/22, the FCC released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (“NPRM”) seeking comment on the rules, policies, and practices regarding satellite and earth station applications under part 25.   • TELEPHONE CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT (“TCPA”)
    • On 12/27, the FCC released an Order on Reconsideration and Declaratory Ruling clarifying two TCPA rules adopted in the 2020 TCPA Exemption Order. For more information and to view a copy of the item, see our post here.
  • BROADBAND DATA COLLECTION
    • On 12/27, the Broadband Data Task Force released a Public Notice announcing that the second Broadband Data Collection filing window will open on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. Providers are required to submit broadband availability and other data as of December 31, 2022 through the window no later than March 1, 2023.  For more information and to view a copy of the Notice, see our post here.
  • 2022 COMMUNICATIONS MARKETPLACE REPORT
    • On 12/30, the FCC released the 2022 Communications Marketplace Report. The FCC issues the Report every two years, which analyzes the state of competition in the US, actions taken by the FCC to address challenges and opportunities in the communications marketplace, and the FCC’s agenda to continue to address these challenges and opportunities.  For more information and to view a copy of the Report, see our post here.
  • NOMINATIONS
    • On 1/3, President Biden announced that he had renominated Gigi Sohn to serve as the fifth Commissioner at the FCC. President Biden first nominated Sohn to serve as Commissioner in October 2021.  The White House’s announcement can be viewed here.
