FCC SYSTEM OUTAGES AND FILING EXTENSIONS
- On 6/21, the FCC released a Public Notice announcing that the systems that had been experiencing outages since June 9, 2023 were back online and providing additional guidance on extensions for filing deadlines affected by the system outages. WIRELESS EMERGENCY ALERTS
- On 6/21, the FCC published in the Federal Register the Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeking comment on proposals to improve the effectiveness of Wireless Emergency Alerts (“WEA”), specify performance metrics, and increase transparency regarding WEA use and performance. Comments are due on or before July 21, 2023 and replies are due on or before August 21, 2023. For more information and to view a copy of the notice, see our post here.
ROBOCALLS
- On 6/21, the FCC published in the Federal Register the Sixth Report and order adopting a mandatory authentication requirement for the first intermediate provider in the call path, expanding robocall mitigation requirements for all providers, and adopting additional enforcement tools. The Report and Order is effective August 21, 2023, except for certain identified provisions that are awaiting OMB approval. For more information, and to view a copy of the Notice, see our post here.

- This morning, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation held a full committee nominations hearing to consider the reappointments of Commissioners Carr and Starks to the FCC, the appointment of Anna Gomez as the fifth FCC Commissioner, and the appointment of Fara Damelin to be Inspector General of the FCC.
