January 25, 2024 Weekly Wireless Wrap-Up

Good afternoon from Washington, DC!  Below you will find this week’s Wireless Wrap-Up; your update on the wireless telecommunications regulatory landscape, important wireless decisions, and more!  Here is your wrap-up: 

  • OPEN MEETINGS
    • This morning, the FCC held its January Open Meeting. The FCC considered eight items, including a Report and Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeking to ensure mandatory participation in the Disaster Information Reporting System and a Report and Order requiring wireless providers to implement location-based routing for wireless calls and real-time texts to 911.  For more information and to view a copy of the Agenda, see our post here.
  • SIM SWAPPING AND PORT-OUT FRAUD
    • On 1/19, the FCC released a Public Notice seeking comment on CTIA’s Petition for Partial Reconsideration of the FCC’s SIM Swapping and Port-Out Fraud Report and Order. CTIA seeks a 12-month extension of the compliance deadline.  For more information and to view copies of the items, see our post here.
  • BROADBAND DATA COLLECTION
    • On 1/19, the FCC released a Public Notice seeking comment on the Broadband Data Collection challenge processes, which will inform a forthcoming report to Congress. Comments are due on or before February 19, 2024 and reply comments are due on or before March 5, 2024.  For more information and to view a copy of the Notice, see our post here.
  • 988 OUTAGE REPORTING
    • On 1/16, the FCC published in the Federal Register the Report and Order adopting reporting and notice requirements for service outages potentially affecting 988 special facilities, thereby setting the effective date. The Order is effective February 15, 2024, except for amendments to section 4.9 of the FCC’s rules, which are delayed indefinitely for OMB approval.  For more information and to view a copy of the Notice, see our post here.
