January 4, 2024 Weekly Wireless Wrap-Up

Happy New Year from Washington, DC!  Below you will find this week’s Wireless Wrap-Up; your update on the wireless telecommunications regulatory landscape, important wireless decisions, and more!  Here is your wrap-up:

  • OPEN MEETINGS
    • At the December Open Meeting last month, the Commission adopted several items, including a Second Report and Order, Second Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking, and Waiver Order on blocking illegal robotexts, a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on achieving 100% wireless handset model hearing aid compatibility, and a Report and Order updating the FCC’s data breach notification rules.   • T-MOBILE/LB/CHANNEL 51 ASSIGNMENT APPLICATIONS
    • On 12/29, the FCC released a Memorandum Opinion and Order (“Order”) granting several assignment applications seeking FCC consent to assign 600 MHz spectrum licenses from Channel 51 and LB License to T-Mobile. For more information and to view a copy of the Order, see our post here.
  • 24 GHZ BAND
    • On 12/22, the FCC released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (“NPRM”) seeking comment on a proposal to implement certain decisions regarding the 24.25-24.75 GHz band made in the World Radiocommunication Conference held by the International Telecommunication Union (“ITU”) in 2019 (“WRC-19”).   • DATA BREACH RULES
    • On 12/21, the FCC released a Report and Order (“R&O”) updating the Commission’s data breach notification rules aimed at ensuring that telecommunications carriers and interconnected VoIP providers, along with telecommunications relay service (“TRS”) providers adequately safeguard sensitive customer information.   • ROBOTEXTS
    • On 12/18, the FCC released the Second Report and Order, Second Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in GC Docket Nos. 02-278 and 21-402, and Waiver Order in CG Docket No. 17-59 on combatting illegal robotexts.   • INTERNATIONAL 214 AUTHORIZATIONS
    • In December, the FCC published in the Federal Register the Order adopting a one-time collection to update the Commission’s records regarding foreign ownership of international section 214 authorization holders (“One-Time Information Collection”). This publication established a January 22, 2023 filing deadline for the One-Time Information Collection.  For more information and to view a copy of the Notice, see our post here.
