March 15th, 2024 Weekly Wireless Wrap-Up

Good afternoon from Washington, DC!  Below you will find this week’s Wireless Wrap-Up; your update on the wireless telecommunications regulatory landscape, important wireless decisions, and more!  Here is your wrap-up:

  • OPEN MEETING
    • Yesterday, the FCC hosted its March Open Meeting. The FCC considered five items, including a Report and Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking creating a voluntary cybersecurity labeling program for wireless consumer IoT products, a Report adopting a new broadband speed benchmark, and a Report and Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking adopting a framework for supplemental coverage from space.  For more information and to view a copy of the Agenda, see our post here.
  • LOCATION BASED ROUTING
    • On 3/14, the FCC published in the Federal Register the Report and Order (“R&O”) adopting rules requiring Commercial Mobile Radio Service (“CMRS”) providers to deploy location-based routing (“LBR”) technology to route IP-originated wireless 911 calls and real-time-text (“RTT”) communications to the appropriate public safety answering point (“PSAP”), thereby setting the compliance and effective dates. For additional information, and to view a copy of the item, see our post here.
  • SPECTRUM
    • On March 7, 2024, the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau (“WTB”) released a Public Notice seeking comment on ways to facilitate access to the FCC’s inventory of currently unassigned spectrum in bands previously licensed for wireless services through auctions (“Inventory Spectrum”) in light of the ongoing lapse of FCC auction authority. For more information and to view a copy of the Public Notice, see our post here.
